What to Wear to a Country Wedding in Victoria

Country weddings are a big part of life in regional Victoria, and they are their own sport. The venue is a winery lawn or a beautifully converted shed, the car park is a paddock, and the temperature will drop ten degrees the moment the sun goes down. We dress wedding guests for exactly these days all year round in our Ballarat boutique. Here is how to get it right.

Start with the venue, not the dress

Before you fall in love with anything, find out where you will actually be standing. A lawn ceremony rules out fine stilettos. A shed reception in July calls for sleeves or serious layering. An exposed hilltop with a view means wind, and wind has opinions about floaty fabrics and wide brims. Choose the dress for the day you will really have, and the photographs will thank you.

The weather will change its mind

Even a summer evening gets properly cold out here once the sun is gone, and the best dressed guests are the ones still comfortable at 10pm. Plan the layer at the same time as the dress: a cropped blazer, a structured jacket or an elegant knit that belongs with the outfit rather than apologising for it. It is the single most useful piece of advice we give wedding guests.

What actually works to wear

Anything white, ivory or close to it stays in the wardrobe; that part is not negotiable. Beyond that, strong colour and print both photograph beautifully outdoors. Shona Joy and Significant Other our most requested wedding guest and bridesmaid labels, with a colour range broad enough to please any dress code. Rebecca Vallance brings polish for a formal do, Leo Lin earns its keep in garden settings, and Acler is the pick when you want your outfit a little less expected.

Shoes for grass, gravel and dancing

The country wedding trifecta. A block heel handles lawn and gravel where a stiletto sinks, and whatever you choose needs to survive the dance floor, because country weddings end on one. Break your shoes in at home first. Browse our heels with this in mind.

Buy it for the next three weddings

Wedding season out here comes in clusters, and nobody wants to buy a new dress for every one. Choose a piece you can restyle: different earrings, a new layer, hair up instead of down. A well cut midi in a strong colour will carry three weddings without anyone noticing it twice. That is the fewer, better approach our whole boutique is built on.

Quick answers

Can I wear black to a wedding? These days, yes, especially to an evening or formal wedding. Lift it with colour or standout accessories so it reads celebratory rather than sombre.

How far ahead should I shop? Three to four weeks is comfortable. Popular sizes in wedding guest styles sell through fast in season, and ordering early leaves room for an exchange if the fit is not right.

Can you help me put the whole outfit together? Gladly. That is the point of a boutique. Visit us at 917B Sturt Street, Ballarat and we will style the dress, layer, shoes and jewellery together, or shop online with free shipping on Australian orders over $150.
